Species Tetranychus urticae Koch, 1835

Introduction

There is some doubt as to the taxonomic status of certain economically important species of Tetranychus. Tetranychus urticae Koch and T. cinnabarinus (Boisduval) are here treated as synonyms following recent major works, for example Bolland et al. (1998) and Seeman & Beard (2011). Seeman & Beard (2011) reviewed possible methods for distinguishing between T. urticae and T. cinnabarinus. The accuracy of many published identifications remains very ambiguous, and the reliability of molecular data used to separate these species has been questioned (de Mendonça et al., 2011).

The name telarius has been suppressed (ICZN, 1971).
