Family TROUESSARTIIDAE Gaud, 1957
Introduction
The family Trouessartiidae includes about 100 species in 11 genera, most of which are in the genus Trouessartia (reviewed by Santana 1976). They occur in the wing and head feathers of a wide range of bird hosts (Gaud & Atyeo 1996; OConnor 2009). Only two species in a single genus are known from Australia, and one of these is of questionable identity. This is obviously a gross underestimate of the diversity of the Australian fauna. Many more species in this family will be discovered when the Australian fauna of feather mites is surveyed more extensively.
