Diagnosis

Valves always strongly calcified and frequently richly sculptured. Fused zone broad, penetrated by more or less numerous marginal pore canals which are mostly simple, sometimes branching. Inner margin and line of concrescence mostly separated at valve ends, forming small vestibule. Normal pore canals simple or of sieve type. Hinge amphidont. Antennula 6-segmented. Penultimate segment of mandibular palp elongate, respiratory plate with two rays. Respiratory plate of maxillula without aberrant seta. Hemipenis with huge basal capsule, and sometimes secondary capsule present. Distal lobe simple, copulatory tube short and indistinctive.
