Family TRACHELIPODIDAE Strouhal, 1953

Introduction

In Australia, trachelipodids live in litter or under wood and stones in forest or woodland or near the sea coast. One species has been found with ants. The family occurs in Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean area, but one species has become cosmopolitan. Ferrara & Argano (1989) redefined the family and distinguished its genera. The family name, often misspelled Trachelipidae, was corrected by Souza-Kury (1993).

Diagnosis

Australian species do not conglobate. Pleonal epimera 3–5 large, body outline not interrupted between pereon and pleon. Head usually with lateral lobes. Antenna 2 flagellum with 2 articles in Australian species. Pleopodal lungs present in exopods of pleopods 1–5.
