Introduction
Toxopneustids are circum-tropical in distribution and include 10 extant genera. Six genera occur in Australian waters, with 11 species recorded.
This family is distinguished from other families in the order Camarodonta by the following combination of character states: lantern camarodont-type; teeth keeled; tubercles imperforate, noncrenulate; test not sculptured; ambulacra trigeminate to polyporous, commonly conspicuously widened adorally; gill slits present, distinct and narrow, in many, very deep and divided by longitudinal keel.
