Family TEGEOCRANELLIDAE Balogh, 1988

Introduction

In the classification of Schatz et al. (2011), the family Tegeocranellidae includes a single genus with 17 species. The data summarised by Subias (2004, 2011) show that the genus is cosmopolitan. Most species have been collected in semi-aquatic habitats, such as swamps and temporary pools (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). Two species are known from Australia, both collected from rainforest litter in northern New South Wales. Balogh & Balogh (1988) and Balogh & Balogh (1992) show the authorship of the family name Tegeocranellidae as P. Balogh, 1987. However, I have been unable to locate this publication, or indeed any publication by P. Balogh in 1987. The earliest use of the name appears to be that in Balogh & Balogh (1988), so I here regard the authorship of the name as Tegeocranellidae P. Balogh in Balogh & Balogh (1988). The same conclusion was reached by Behan-Pelletier (1997).
