Introduction
Rudman (1999) notes that the species has been constantly misidentified as Stylocheilus longicaudata.
Stylocheilus striatus had long been regarded as a widely distributed species, reportedly occurring in the Indo-Pacific, Western Atlantic, and the Eastern Pacific. Recent work by Bazzicalupo et al. (2020) revealed that S. striatus was actually a complex of species, with the name S. striatus restricted for specimens occurring in the Indo-Pacific, and the names S. polyomma and S. rickettsi resurrected for specimens occurring in the Western Atlantic and the Eastern Pacific, respectively.
