Introduction
Rudman (1999) notes that the species has been constantly misidentified as Stylocheilus striatus.
Bazzicalupo et al. (2020) notes that no specimens of Stylocheilus longicauda were included in their investigation of the systematics of Stylocheilus as the species is pelagic and required additional methods and effort. They suggest that S. longicauda could well be a single pantropical species or could be a complex of species, or an ecotype of Stylocheilus species that are benthic. Further investigation is necessary to determine the nature of S. longicauda and its relationship to other Stylocheilus spp.
