Introduction

Systematic studies of Spondylus have largely been based on morphological work. Very little has been done to elucidate bibliographic record identities (hence mostly ignored herein). The group would benefit greatly from molecular studies.

SPONDYLIDAE: Spondylus electus Fulton, 1915 — Lamprell, K. & Healy, J. 1998. Bivalves of Australia. Leiden : Backhuys Publishers Vol. 2 288 pp. [116, no. 280] (misidentification (not of Fulton 1915: 336). Spondylus electus is based on a Caribbean species, Spondylus tenuis Schreibers, 1793 (see Lamprell 2006; Huber 2010). It is not certain what species the Australian record refers to); Huber, M. 2010. Compendium of Bivalves. A full-color guide to 3,300 of the world's marine bivalves. A status on Bivalvia after 250 years of research. Hackenheim, Germany : ConchBooks 901 pp., 1 CD-ROM.
