This species was considered valid by many authors including Haeckel (1879: 352), Mayer (1910: 436), and Browne (1916a: 200); however, others have considered only one species valid, i.e., S. bitentaculata, including Vanhöffen (1913b: 32), Thiel (1936: 68), Kramp (1961b: 270) and Bouillon & Boero (2000: 60)].
