Species Sinotaia guangdungensis (Kobelt, 1906)

Introduction

This species has confused taxonomic history. Originally described from Guangdong (“Guangdung’) province in China as a subspecies of Vivipara heudei, itself described as a variety of Paludina quadrata Benson, 1842, by Dautzenberg & Fischer (1905). Treated at species level by Prashad (1928) (as "quangdungensis") and then placed in the synonymy of V. polyzonatus by Yen (1939) before being reinstated as Angulyagra guangdungensis (Yen, 1943). Brandt (1974) placed guangdungensis in the genus Sinotaia as a subspecies of quadrata, while Shea (1994) placed it in Bellamya as a subspecies of B. heudei. Currently V. heudei is considered a synonym of P. qudrata (= Sinotaia quadrata) and we follow Ng et al. (2014) and Ponder et al. (2023) in treating the species as Sinotaia guangdungensis. See Shea (1994) and Ng et al. (2014) for further details.
