Family SARSIELLIDAE Brady & Norman, 1896
Diagnosis
Anterior of carapace generally rounded in lateral view without incisure or with very shallow incisure; incisure generally deeper in males; carapace of males often more elongate and sometimes considerably smaller than carapace of females; surface ornamentation varied, but generally similar in males and females; caudal process usually present, but varying in degree of development; posterior infold with 2 or more brushlike bristles dorsal to caudal process; surface with few hairs or abundant hairs of several types; hairs generally abundant around free margins; single small bristle present on anterior infold near middle of valve margin. First antenna: 3rd and 4th segments fused without suture separating them; sensory bristle of 5th segment of female limb bare or with 2 to 3 short filaments; sensory bristle of 5th segment in male with numerous filaments. Second antenna: endopod in female either 1- or 2-segmented: 1-segmented endopods with 1 or 2 anterior proximal bristles, and on some species also 2 posterior proximal bristles, or 1 terminal bristle; 2-segmented endopods with 2 or 3 anterior bristles on 1st segment and 1 (rarely 2) terminal bristle on small 2nd segment. Endopod in male 1-segmented with several bristles or 3-segmented with 3rd segment reflexed on 2nd. Mandibula: endopod of female with terminal claw on each segment; endopod of male with terminal claw only on 3rd segment. Maxilla: exopod with 2 or 3 bristles. Endopod of female 2-segmented with 2 stout terminal alpha- and beta-bristles on 1st segment and 5 stout bristles along terminal margin of 2nd segment; endopod of male reduced with weakly developed bristles. Fifth limb: only one segment with one bristle present. Sixth limb: each limb with 1 to 4 segments; terminal segment narrow with 6 to 14 bristles. Seventh limb: limb in males sometimes same as in females, sometimes reduced; sometimes terminal combs missing in both sexes. Furca: different in different genera.
