Family SYRINGOPHILIDAE Lavoipierre, 1953

Introduction

The Syringophilidae is a family of parasites that feed on the quills of feathers in a wide variety of birds. It is likely that thousands of species await description (Walter et al. 2009). Domrow (1991) recorded only two species from Australia, one described and one undescribed. Recent research has increased those numbers to 17 species in 13 genera, but Australia's 700 species of birds are likely to harbour mnay more species. Glowska et al. (2015) provided an updated list of the world species of Syringophilidae.
