Family SYRINGOBIIDAE Trouessart, 1897
- Syringobieae Trouessart, E.L. 1897. Sur la classification des Sarcoptides plumicoles [Acar.]. Bulletin de la Société Entomologique de France 1: 419-422 [original spelling].
Introduction
The Syringobiidae is a family of parasitic mites that occur in the quills and feather shafts of sea birds in the Order Charadriiformes (Gaud & Atyeo 1996; OConnor 2009). They feed on the material that fills the quill cavity, and can sometimes cause some damage to the feathers. The family was comprehensively revised by Dabert (2003a, 2003b), who documented 14 genera and 67 species. Only two species are known from Australia, but that number is certain to increase when the Australian feather mite fauna is studied more thoroughly.
