Family SUCTOBELBIDAE Jacot, 1938

Introduction

The family Suctobelbidae is very large and cosmopolitan, with 31 genera and more than 300 species (Schatz et al. 2011; Subias 2011). The most recent large taxonomic study of the family was by Chinone (2003). Despite their diversity and abundance, the feeding habits of Suctbelbidae have not been fully studied (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). The Australian fauna is very poorly known. Only a single species has been identified, and it is also known from New Zealand and India (Subias 2011). A further four genera are known only on the basis of unidentified species, and unidentified species of Suctobelbidae have been reported from Australia by Osler & Beattie (2001) and Osler & Murphy (2005).
