Introduction
The family Stichopodidae comprises eight genera, found in tropical and temperate seas. Three genera and 13 species are recorded in Australian waters.
Stichopodids are similar to Holothuriidae but are distinguished by having gonads in two tufts, one on each side of dorsal mesentery and ossicles often include 'C'- or 'S'-shaped rods (Stichopus), sometimes fragile dichotomously branched rods (Thelenota); no cuvierian organs.
