Family STERNOPHORIDAE Chamberlin, 1923

Compiler and date details

Mark S. Harvey, Western Australian Museum, Perth, Western Australia, Australia

Introduction

Sternophorids are small to medium-sized pseudoscorpions and, with the exception of a single cavernicolous species from Papua New Guinea, appear to be strictly corticolous. They are very pale in colouration and are dorso-ventrally flattened. Three genera and 20 species are currently recognised (Harvey 1985 1991) from most tropical and subtropical regions of the world, and several species are found in temperate zones. The described Australian fauna consists of four species of Afrosternophorus (Harvey, 1985), but several undescribed species are represented in museum collections (Harvey, unpublished data).

Diagnosis

The presence of a pseudosternum between coxae of legs I to III easily distinguishes this family from all other pseudoscorpions.
