Family SOPHROSYNIDAE Lowry & Stoddart, 2010
Introduction
Recently Lowry & Stoddart (2010b) established the monotypic family Sophrosynidae to accommodate 14 lysianassoid species, four from Australian waters. Sophrosynids are rare deep water amphipods, seldom collected or studied. Although species superficially resemble other lysianassoid amphipods they are distinguished by the severe reduction in mouthpart morphology, reduced to such an extent that it is not currently possible to see a relationship between sophrosynids and any of the other lysianassoid families. There is nothing known about the biology of sophrosynid amphipods.
