Introduction

The Solasteridae are cosmopolitan and include nine genera. Three of these are recorded in Australian waters, each from one species.

Solasterids are distinguished within the order Velatida by the following combination of character states: disc rather large, arms long, five to many; aboral skeleton normally open and irregularly reticulate, with paxillate plates; actinal intermediate plates present; single or double row of marginal paxillae; supradorsal membrane absent.
