Family SIPHONOPHORIDAE Newport, 1844
Introduction
Of the three currently recognised families of Siphonophorida, only Siphonophoridae has been reported from Australia, where it is represented by Rhinosiphora Verhoeff, 1924. According to Hoffman (1980:116), this family "remains a sort of taxonomist's nightmare, and it is patently obvious that nothing short of a complete revision of the group will bring any order into confusion". Without explanation, Jeekel (2001) referred to Siphonophora two of the species placed by Verhoeff (1941) in Rhinosiphora. This checklist retains Verhoeff's placement; Siphonophora is a poorly circumscribed millipede genus, and the name is a homonym for jellyfish and plant-bug genera.
