Introduction

Siphonariids are marine limpets that live in shallow tidal areas in sub-Antarctic, temperate and tropical regions of the world, with the exception of the North Atlantic. They have a thin, ovate and asymmetrical patelliform shell with a subcentral, eroded apex. The siphonal groove is distinct and interrupts the horseshoe-shaped pedal muscle scar on the right side. The jaw consists of numerous tiny rods and is slightly arched. They have a secondary gill in the pulmonary cavity enabling them to respire in water.

Tenison-Woods (1877), McAlpine (1952) and Hubendick (1954) revised Australian siphonariids. Iredale (1940) created eight genera for the eastern Australian species. Jenkins (1981, 1983, 1984) provided data on several species from southern Australia. No comprehensive review of all Australian species has been undertaken. Hubendick (1945) presented a detailed phylogeny and biogeography of the family together with details of anatomy and recognised only two genera. Stanisic (1998) has recognised several of Iredale's names as subgenera, although without justification. This scheme is followed here but further work on the systematics of this group is needed before the higher groupings can be stabilised.
