Family SCHENDYLIDAE
Introduction
Members of the Schendylidae can obtain a length of 9–70 mm, and are white to yellow-brown in colour. Schendylids have slender antennae and the large head covered by a suboval cephalic plate allows part of the prehensors to be seen from above (Hoffmann 1982: 686). Diagnostic characters for Schendylidae involve the mandible (bearing a group of dentate lamellae and a single pectinate lamella), fusion of the labrum to the clypeus, and the toothed labral margin. The family comprises 30 genera and 80 species, which are predominantly tropical but with a few species found close to the Arctic Circle. Two genera and three species are known to occur in Australia.
