Taxonomic Notes
Child (1995, p. 99) synonymizes R. vallatus with the California species R. philopsammum (collected from the continental shelf W of Chile in 64 m). According to Child (1995), R. vallatus is "apparently only a slender version of R. philopsammum." In the continuing absence of a single criterion for clearly differentiating species within the Pycnogonida, I prefer to leave the shallow-water Great Barrier Reef species separate from the colder, deeper water species at this time.
