Genus Rapana Schumacher, 1817

  • Rapana Schumacher, C.F. 1817. Essai d'un Nouveau Systéme des Habitations des vers Testacés. Copenhagen : Schultz 287 pp., pls 1-22. [65, 214] [Rapanus [Blainville, 1826, Dictionnaire des sciences naturelles, 44: 452] is an incorrect subsequent spelling. Rapanus Sowerby [non Schumacher, 1817] 1839 is listed as a separate name in Neave, 1940, Nomenclator Zoologicus, 4: 12, but Sowerby [A conchological manual, ed. 1: 92] explicitly attributed the name to Schumacher. Prior to Radwin & d'Attilio, Cossmann [1903, Essais de paléoconchologie comparée, 5: 63] and Wenz [1941, Handbuch der Paläozoologie, 6(5): 1083] cited Buccinum bezoar Linnaeus, 1767, as the type species; however, although it is a senior subjective synonym of Rapana foliacea, it was not an originally included nominal species, and this did not qualify as a valid type designation].
    Type species:
Rapana foliacea Schumacher, 1817 by subsequent designation (Radwin & d'Attilio, 1975, Transactions of the San Diego Society of Natural History, 17(20): 286).
