Introduction
The Pyrgomorphidae is a diverse assemblage of mostly colourful species with conical heads and slow habits associated with an aposematic lifestyle. Many species raise the tegmina to display brightly coloured wings when disturbed.
This family had been included as a family of Acridoidea, or Pamphagoidea, but is now more properly a member of the Pyrgomorphoidea. Species show a range of adaptations as is usual for a large group. Some species are associated with grasses, others with herbs and shrubs. Several species may have long- and short-winged forms.
