Taxonomic Notes
Pycnogonum australe is based on a larval form with three pairs of legs and traces of a fourth pair and is not currently identifiable (Clark, 1963).
Stock (1968, p. 60-61) divides the genus Pycnogonum into three subgenera based on the condition of the ovigerous leg in the male: Subgenus Pycnogonum (male ovigerous leg is 8-9 segmented, terminal claw is present); Subgenus Retroviger (male ovigerous leg is 4-7 segmented, terminal claw may or may not be present); Subgenus Nulloviger (male lacks ovigerous legs).
