Introduction

The genus Psoroptes is a difficult one taxonomically. For example, the differences between P. cuniculi and P. ovis identified by Sweatman (1958) have been questioned (Wright et al., 1983, 1984; Boyce et al, 1990), and the exact status of these and other taxa in the genus remains uncertain. Bochkov (2010) considered that P. ovis, P. equi, P. cuniculi and P. cervinus are all synonyms, but that opinion is not universally accepted.
