Subspecies Psephotus haematonotus haematonotus (Gould, 1838)
- Platycercus haematonotus Gould, J. 1838. In Proceedings of meeting of Zoological Society of London, Sept. 26, 1837. Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London 1837: 88-89 [published 13 Feb 1838, publication dated as 1837] [88] [re-described without additional information in Gould, J. 1838. Descriptions of new species of Australian Birds. Principally in the author's collection, with characters of several new genera. In, A Synopsis of the Birds of Australia, and the Adjacent Islands. London : J. Gould. Pt IV Appendix pp. 1–8 [published Apr. 1838, publication dated as 1837–1838] and in Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond. 1837: 151 (Dec. 1838); although ANSP 22921 cited as type by Stone, W. in Stone, W. & Mathews, G.M. 1913. A list of the species of Australian birds described by John Gould, with the location of the type-specimens. Austral Avian Records 1: 129–180, and although this specimen is almost certainly the male illustrated on pl. 36 in Gould, J. 1848. The Birds of Australia. London : J. Gould Vol. 5 92 pls pp. [Pt 8, 1842], there is no firm evidence that it was part of the original series from which the species was described, see Meyer de Schauensee, R. 1957. On some avian types, principally Gould's, in the collection of the Academy. Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia 109: 123–246, who cites none in ANSP; the original material may well have been taken by Major Thomas Mitchell on any of his expeditions in inland New South Wales in 1831, 1835 and 1836: the species was mentioned concurrently by Mitchell (see Nanodes haematonotis Mitchell, 1838 (q.v.)), was cited in the vernacular from the 'brushes near the Darling' in Mitchell's collections in AM by Bennett, G. 1837. Catalogue of Specimens of Natural History and miscellaneous curiosities deposited in the Australian Museum. Sydney : Australian Museum, and was described by Gould together with Northiella haematogaster (Gould, 1838), itself based on material from Mitchell, see Mathews, G.M. 1914. Note on Platycercus (haematogaster), Gould. South Australian Ornithologist 1(2): 15–17 [Sclater, P.L. 1893. List of the dates of delivery of the sheets of the "Proceedings" of the Zoological Society of London, from the commencement in 1830 to 1859 inclusive. Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London 1893: 435–440]; if Mitchell was the source, the type material may include the two specimens in BMNH from 'Australia' cited by Salvadori, T. 1891. Catalogue of the Birds in the British Museum. Catalogue of the Psittaci, or Parrots. London : British Museum Vol. 20 xvii 658 pp. XVIII pls (568) as coming from Mitchell—but not the material in AM which Gould would not have seen at the time; note, however, that the protologue specifies specimen(s) in Gould's own collection then].
