Introduction

Protorugosa is readily distinguished from Austrorhytida by the combination of brown shell, rugose protoconch sculpture (weak to almost smooth in the latter), teleoconch sculpture of rugose radial ribs, and the larger size.

Diagnosis

Shell medium to large, subglobose with a low-domed spire, last whorl very large and flared; protoconch sculptured with curved rugose radial ribs, upper whorl surface usually with prominent radial ribs and weakly developed, discontinuous spiral striae, underside smooth or with weak spiral striae; lip simple; umbilicus wide, V-shaped. Shell colour yellow to deep reddish-brown usually with a yellow spiral band surrounding the umbilicus.
