Diagnosis
Thinly encrusting sponges with hispid surface. Skeleton consisting of single, long, tylostyles oriented perpendicularly to the substrate, heads embedded in a basal plate of spongin. Spicules tylostyles of variable size, but no distinctly localised size categories. A dozen or more species, distributed over most ocean regions.
