Subfamily Podophthalminae Dana, 1851

Diagnosis

Carapace broad, subtrapezoidal; widest anteriorly; front extremely narrow, T-shaped, lying below eyestalks; orbits and eyestalks very long, occupying whole of anterior margin of carapace; supra-orbital fissures reduced; anterolateral border divided into 2–4 teeth. Antennules not completely retractile in fossae beneath front. Antennae with basal article short; flagellum long and slender, included in orbit. Epistome short. Chelipeds much longer than ambulatory legs, bearing a set of spines on merus, carpus and palm. Last pair of legs with propodus and dactylus flattened, paddle-shaped.
