Mainland Australia, E and S of Great Divide Range, coastal and subcoastal E Australia, north to Hughenden, the Atherton Tableland and Cairns—west to W slopes of Great Dividing Range to about Blackall, and the Maranoa-Warrego Rivers, QLD, the Barwon-Namoi-Gwydir-Macquarie River systems and Riverina, NSW—and south-west to central and western VIC as far as the Wimmera and the South-East of SA (region of Naracoorte-Millicent)—also Fraser Is. and islands in Moreton Bay, QLD, but not confirmed for main Bass Strait islands except Cape Barren. Intergrades with P. s. phalaenoides Gould, 1840 at northern limits between Burdekin and Endeavour Rivers, QLD, and more broadly with P. s. brachypterus Gould, 1841 west of outer western fringes of Great Dividing Range through E Lake Eyre-Murray-Darling basins from upper Thomson to mid Murray Rivers, QLD, NSW, VIC and the upper South-East of SA.
