Australia, W of Great Divide an S of c 20°S; all W Australia, north to the Great Sandy and Tanami Deserts and Barkly Tableland, WA, NT—north-east towards the headwaters of the Georgina, Diamantina and Thomson River systems, QLD, where sparse to locally absent around Simpson Desert—east to the Warrego and central and lower Darling Rivers and Hay plains, NSW—south-east to the Murray Mallee, and Big and Ninety-mile Deserts, VIC, SA, including Mt Lofty Range, Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas—accidental on Kangaroo Is. Intergrades broadly with P. s. strigoides (Latham, 1802) at eastern limits from Thomson-Warrego River systems, QLD to W Riverina, NSW, central west VIC, N of Grampians, and the upper South-East of SA—also intergrades broadly with P. s. phalaenoides Gould, 1840 at northern limits, from north sectors of Great Sandy and Tanami Deserts, WA, in west through southern fringes of Barkly Tableland to Selwyn Range and headwaters of Diamantina River, QLD, in east.

Randomly dispersed, seasonal breeder, general carnivore, in pairs or family groups in sandplain heaths, mallee and mulga woodland, eucalypt forest and eucalypt woodland, particularly along drainage lines in arid regions, roosts by day as often or more on ground as in trees, forages by night by flap-and-glide sallying from perches, builds brief platform nests of sticks in trees, both sexes share nidificational duties.
