Introduction
This species has in the past been identified as Cerithideopsilla cingulata in various generic combinations (Hedley 1910; Allan 1950; Reid et al. 2008) and was illustrated under that name by Cernohorsky (1972). Like the other two members of the Pirenella cingulata group in Australasia, P. austrocingulata was distinguished as a distinct species in the molecular phylogenetic analysis of Ozawa et al. (2015).
