Type data:
Holotype ANSP 657 adult ♂, South Australia. - Muscicapa chrysoptera Quoy, J.R.C. & Gaimard, J.P. in Dumont-d'Urville, J. 1830. Voyage de découvertes de l'Astrolabe exécuté par ordre du Roi, pendant les anneés 1826–1827–1828–1829, sous le commandement de M.J. Dumont-d'Urville. Zoologie. Paris : J. Tastu Vol. 1 i 268 pp. [no month of publication] [177] [holotype (probable immature male) identifiable with this species because of extensive white panels in outer rectrices, pallid ventrum and prominent twin cream-buff remige stripes; hitherto identified with this species also by Mathews in his lists of 1913 and 1946 and in his The Birds of Australia 8 (1919-1920) — but Mathews vacillated, following outside opinion in treating the name as a synonym of Petroica rodinogaster (Drapiez, 1820) in his other lists of 1930 and 1931; because (1) Mathews' lists have never been adopted, (2) Muscicapa chrysoptera Quoy & Gaimard has not been used as valid any other primary literature since the mid 19th century, and (3) Petroica phoenicea Gould, 1837 has been used universally in its place since then, chrysoptera Quoy & Gaimard, 1830 is treated as a nomen oblitum here: ICdZN Art. 23.9].
