[37] [the status of P. brunneus is uncertain; Andersen, K. 1912. Catalogue of the Chiroptera in the Collection of the British Museum. 2nd Megachiroptera. London : British Museum Vol. 1 cii 854 pp. [151] retained this form as a species and commented that it is an Australian representative of Pteropus hypomelanus Temminck, 1853; Tate, G.H.H. 1952. Results of the Archbold Expeditions. No. 66 Mammals of Cape York Peninsula with notes on the occurrence of rain forest in Queensland. Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History 98: 563–616 [611] considered P. brunneus to be not truly Australian and was unable to allocate it with certainty to any described form; Corbet, G.B. & Hill, J.E. 1980. A World List of Mammalian Species. London : British Museum viii 226 pp. [36] believed P. brunneus might be a name applied to a vagrant Pteropus hypomelanus; Koopman, K.F. 1984. Taxonomic and distributional notes on tropical Australian bats. American Museum Novitates 2778: 1–48 [2–3] identified P. brunneus as a member of the subniger group (=hypomelanus) of Andersen op. cit. (90, 98); Ride, W.D.L. 1970. A Guide to the Native Mammals of Australia. Melbourne : Oxford Univ. Press xiv 249 pp. 62 pls [180, 247] and Honacki, J.H., Kinman, K.E. & Koeppl, J.W. (eds) 1982. Mammal Species of the World: A taxonomic and geographic reference. Lawrence, Kansas : Allen Press & Assoc. Syst. Coll. ix 694 pp. [122] included P. brunneus in P. hypomelanus].

Known only from the type specimen, the species' taxonomic status unclear, although some authors recognise its distinctness (eg. Koopman 1984, Simmons 2005).
