Taxonomic Decision for Synonymy
- Rowe, F.W.E. in Rowe, F.W.E. & Gates, J. 1995. Echinodermata. In, Wells, A. (ed.). Zoological Catalogue of Australia. Vol. 33. Melbourne : CSIRO Australia xiii 510 pp. [Date published 30 May 1995] (Clark, H.L. 1907. The apodous holothurians. A monograph of the Synaptidae and Molpadiidae. Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge 35(1723): 1–231 pls 1–13 established Polyplectana for a species (
Synapta kefersteinii Selenka, 1867) with 15–25 tentacles and irregular milary granules among its ossicle complement. Heding, S.G. 1931. Über die Synaptiden des Zoologischen Museums zu Hamburg. Zoologische Jahrbucher Syst. 61: 637–696 figs 1–17 pls 1–2 established Pendekaplectana for a new species (P. grisea Heding, 1931) with 15 tentacles and irregular granules; he consideredSynapta nigra Semper, 1868 to be congeneric with P. grisea. There is no justification for recognising Pendekaplectana as a valid genus separate from Polyplectana on the basis of tentacle number alone, though tentacle number and form of miliary granules justify separation of Polyplectana fromSynaptula )
