Family PUSTULOPORIDAE Smitt, 1872

Compiler and date details

July 2001 - Dr Philip Bock

  • Pustuloporidae Smitt, 1872.

Introduction

The genus Pustulopora was introduced by de Blainville (1830) for Ceriopora pustulosa, a Cretaceous fossil. The family Pustuloporidae was defined by Smitt (1872), and has been used, alternatively with Entalophoridae Reuss, 1869, for erect branched cyclostomes where the zooids are directed radially on the entire branch surface. The relationship of any Recent species with the fossil pustuloporids (or entalophorids) has never been studied in detail. The family here is used to include species which, at present, cannot be assigned to any other family.
