Family PTILOXENIDAE Gaud, 1982
Introduction
The classification of the feather mite family Ptiloxenidae was thoroughly reviewed by Dabert & Ehrnsberger (1998). They reported 17 species in three genera from the feathers of water birds, with each mite genus restricted to a different Order of hosts. Only one genus, Sokoloviana, has been reported from Australia, with three species described from the external surface of the flight feathers of waders (Dabert & Ehnrsberger 1996).
