Family PROCTOPHYLLODIDAE Trouessart & Mégnin, 1884
Introduction
The Proctophyllodidae is a family of several hundred species of feather mites that occur on a very wide variety of birds, mostly Passeriformes (Gaud & Atyeo 1996; OConnor 2009). As with most feather mite families, knowledge of the Australian fauna is very fragmentary. Most of the available information is more than 50 years old and may not be accurate. Only ten named species in seven genera have been recognised in Australia, but many more species will be found when the feather mite fauna of Australian birds is surveyed more extensively. The only modern work on the Australian fauna is by Mironov & Proctor (2009), on the genus Atelophyllodes.
