Introduction

The phylum Preaxostyla contains anaerobic flagellates with preaxostylar substructures and many with anterior holdfast organelles, including the oxymonads and trimastixids. The phylum has been placed with the phyla Fornicata and Parabasalia in the group Metamonada (all with basal bodies in groups of four) in the supergroup Excavata (with suspension-feeding groove of ‘excavate’ type). For taxonomic considerations, see Adl et al. (2012).
