Family PLAKOBRANCHIDAE Gray, 1840
Type genus:
Placobranchus van Hasselt, 1824.
Introduction
Plakobranchids are animals without shells except during early development. Body usually slender and soft, with a parapodial flange along each side of the posterior two thirds of the body length. The inner (medial) face of each parapodium is marked with raised ribs that lead to the pericardium that lies between the anterior ends of the parapodia. The pattern of the raised ribs can be useful in separating some species. Compiled from Burn (in press).
