Introduction
The family Phormosomatidae is known from Indo-Pacific and Atlantic regions. Three genera are known, one of which is recorded in Australian waters, represented by two species.
Phormosomatidae are distinguished from the Echinothuriidae, within the order Echinothurioidea by polyporous ambulacral plates, adoral spines lacking a terminal 'hoof' and acuminate teeth; and lantern similar to Echinothuriidae.
