Family PHEROLIODIDAE Paschoal, 1987

Introduction

The classification of the Superfamily Plateremaeoidea has not yet been satisfactorily resolved. Different authors have proposed different classifications, and the system used here for this and related families must be regarded as provisional. In the classification used by Schatz et al. (2011), the family Pheroliodidae includes ten genera and 66 species. Subias (2011) used a narrower concept of the family, including only five genera. The family reaches its highest level of diversity in South America, and includes a large number of arboreal species (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). Four genera and 14 species have been reported from Australia, most of which were described by Hunt (1996). Colloff & Halliday (1998) placed some of these genera in the family Hammeriellidae, which is no longer considered as valid. Majer et al. (2013) recorded an unidentified species from Western Australia.
