Phylum PARABASALIA Honigberg, 1973

Introduction

The phylum Parabasalia contains anaerobic flagellates with prominent parabasal bodies (consisting of striated fibres connecting the Golgi apparatus (dictyosomes) to the flagellar basal bodies (kinetosomes)) and a pelta-axostyle complex, including the trichomonads, hypotrichomonads, tritrichomonads, cristamonads, trichonymphids and spirotrichonymphids. The phylum has been placed with the phyla Fornicata and Preaxostyla in the group Metamonada (all with basal bodies in groups of four) in the supergroup Excavata (with suspension-feeding groove of ‘excavate’ type). For taxonomic considerations, see Adl et al. (2012).
