GENERAL

Detailed description and illustration by Froggatt, W.W. 1929. Notes on gall-making coccids with descriptions of new species. Proceedings of the Linnean Society of New South Wales 54: 375–378 as Opisthoscelis globosa.

SYSTEMATICS

Lindinger, L. 1943. Verzeichnis der Schildlaus-Gattungen, 1. Nachtrag. (Homoptera: Coccoidea). Zeitschrift der Wiener Entomologischen Gesellschaft 28: 205–208, 217–224, 264–265 recognized that Opisthoscelis globosa Froggatt, 1929 was a junior primary homonym of Opisthoscelis globosa Rübsaamen, 1894 and proposed the replacement name Opisthoscelis rubsaameni Lindinger. Hoy, J.M. 1963. A catalogue of the Eriococcidae (Homoptera: Coccoidea) of the world. New Zealand Department of Scientific and Industrial Research Bulletin 150: 1–260 erroneously attributed O. rubsaameni to Froggatt, W.W. 1929. Notes on gall-making coccids with descriptions of new species. Proceedings of the Linnean Society of New South Wales 54: 375–378 and also treated O. rubsaameni as a synonym of O. globosa Rübsaamen.

STRUCTURE

Male galls on surface of leaves, tubular, apex closed in immature specimens and open in mature insects. Female galls on smaller branches, broadly rounded or oval mass at junction with host. Adult female dark brown (see Froggatt, W.W. 1929. Notes on gall-making coccids with descriptions of new species. Proceedings of the Linnean Society of New South Wales 54: 375–378).
