Species Oedura monilis De Vis, 1888

Ocellated Velvet Gecko

Introduction

Oedura ocellata Boulenger 1885 was suggested to be a senior synonym of O. monilis based on the lectotype designation of Bustard (1967). However, the designation by Bustard (1967) of BMNH 64.10.27.2 as lectotype is regarded as invalid, because in choosing a lectotype he not only ignored all relevant Recommendations of the I.C.Z.N., but chose a specimen which, though listed in the material examined, is not consistent with the original description. Further, his selection was contrary to the action of Boulenger, who subsequently fixed his own species by relegating it to the synonymy of Oedura tryoni De Vis, 1884, the only species to which his description and figured specimen (BMNH 54.11.1.1) can apply. See Cogger (1983) and Hoskin (2019) for further details
