Clavontella caerulea Salmon, 1944 by original designation. - Zealandella Salmon, J.T. 1964. An index to the Collembola. Vols 1 & 2. Entomologiske Meddelelser 7: 1-144, 145-644 [111] [according to Ellis & Bellinger op. cit. Salmon's original description of the genus is invalid since he cited no type species; Salmon is quoted as the authority for the genus where a type species, Odontella minutissima Salmon, 1941 is cited (not Zealandella minutissima as quoted by Salmon); unfortunately, Salmon (op. cit. p. 250) gives Zealandella minutadenta as the type species, a species he determined (p. 111) as Xenylla novazealandia Salmon, 1941; (Xenylla novazealandia was later synonymised with Xenylla maritima, see Gama Assalino, M.M. & Greenslade, Penelope 1981. Relationships between the distribution and phylogeny of Xenylla (Collembola: Hypogastruridae) species in Australia and New Zealand. Revue d'Écologie et de Biologie du Sol 18(2): 269–284); Salmon (op. cit. p. 111) synonymised Clavontella caerulea Salmon, 1944 with Zealandella minutissima (or in reality Odontella minutissima); they are type species for the genera Clavontella Salmon, 1944 and Zealandella Salmon, 1964 respectively; Salmon (op. cit.) says Zealandella has priority not Clavontella Salmon, 1944 but following ICZN Art. 13b this is not so, hence Zealandella is a junior synonym of Clavontella Salmon, 1944; Deharveng, L. 1981. La famille des Odontellidae: phylogénèse et taxonomie. Trav. Lab. d'Ecobiol. Arthr. Edaphiques Toulouse 3(1): 1–21 synonymised Zealandella with Odontella Schäffer, 1897 and included Clavontella also; Clavontella caerulea Salmon, 1944 and Odontella minutissima Salmon, 1941 may represent two valid species of Odontella Schäffer, 1897].
