All inland and subcoastal E Australia, north to E Kimberley Division (east Ord River drainage), WA, W and central Arnhem Land (upper Alligator Rivers), south coast of Gulf of Carpentaria, NT, and foot of Cape York Peninsula to the Mitchell-Walsh Rivers, QLD—east to east watershed of Great Dividing Range and, patchily, east coast between Cairns, Qld, and region of Sydney, NSW, then inland as far south-east as Canberra and Albury, NSW, and Strathbogie Ranges, Grampians and the Little Desert, VIC—south to south coast between the South-East of SA (Penola-Robe) and Fowlers Bay, SA—and west to around east head of Great Australian Bight (?), eastern fringes of Nullarbor Plain, the central Australian ranges and eastern fringe of Great Sandy Desert to the upper Ord River drainage, WA—absent from central Simpson and Sandover Deserts—established in small numbers around Sydney, NSW, Healesville, VIC, and on Kangaroo Is., SA, since introduction. Intergrades with O. l. whitlocki Mathews, 1912 on broad front on western margins of range from west rim of Lake Eyre basin through central Australian ranges (Everard-Musgrave-Macdonnell Ranges) probably to Great Victoria Desert and eastern fringes of Gibson and Great Sandy Deserts north-west to south and central Kimberley Division.
