Family ORIBATELLIDAE Jacot, 1925

Introduction

The family Oribatellidae includes ten genera and 131 species world-wide (Schatz et al. 2011). The family is cosmopolitan, but is uncommon in the Southern Hemisphere (summarised by Subias 2011). Some genera that were included in the family by previous authors have now been moved into other families, and the placement of some other genera remains questionable (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009). The Australian fauna of Oribatellidae is poorly known, with only one known endemic species from North Queensland. O'Dowd et al. (1991) reported an unidentified species in an unknown genus near Lamellobates. Colloff & Halliday (1998) placed Safrobates in the Oribatellidae, but it is here placed in the Punctoribatidae.
